Local SEO for service businesses: the parts that actually move the needle

You don't need an agency retainer to rank locally. Here's the short list of things that actually move a service business up the map pack — and the busywork you can skip.

If you run a contracting, cleaning, HVAC, or home-services business, “local SEO” gets sold to you as a mysterious monthly retainer. Most of it isn’t mysterious, and a lot of it you can do yourself in an afternoon. Here’s the short list that actually moves you up the local map pack — and the busywork you can ignore.

1. Your Google Business Profile is the whole game

For a local service business, your Google Business Profile (the thing that shows up in the map pack) matters more than your website. Three things drive it:

  • Categories. Pick the most specific primary category that fits, then add every relevant secondary one. “HVAC contractor” beats “contractor.”
  • Reviews, recent and steady. Ten reviews this year beats fifty from 2021. A steady trickle signals an active business. Ask every happy customer — a single text with the review link the day after the job closes is enough.
  • Photos. Real job photos, posted regularly. Google reads activity as a signal, and customers trust a profile that looks alive.

2. NAP consistency — boring, but it counts

NAP is Name, Address, Phone. The exact same string everywhere it appears — your site, your Google profile, Yelp, the chamber of commerce listing, Facebook. “Suite 200” in one place and “Ste. 200” in another is the kind of small mismatch that quietly dilutes your local signal. Pick one format and use it everywhere.

3. A page per service, a page per area

Generic “we do everything everywhere” pages don’t rank. A page that says exactly what you do and exactly where — “Emergency HVAC repair in [your city]” — matches how people actually search. You don’t need hundreds. You need one solid page per core service and one per area you genuinely serve.

4. Speed and mobile — the table stakes

More than half your traffic is on a phone, often standing in a driveway deciding who to call. A page that takes six seconds to load loses that call. You don’t need a redesign — you need a fast, mobile-first page with your phone number above the fold and a tap-to-call button.

What you can skip

  • Buying backlinks. At best wasted money, at worst a penalty.
  • Keyword-stuffed blog posts nobody reads. One genuinely useful page beats twenty thin ones.
  • Obsessing over your desktop ranking when your customers are all on mobile.

Where a CRM fits

The review trickle and the follow-up are where most service businesses leak. A CRM that fires a review request automatically the day after a job closes, and keeps your customer list in one place for the occasional “we’re booking spring maintenance now” message, turns a one-time job into a repeat customer and a five-star review. That’s the compounding part — and it’s the part you can put on autopilot. VertaFlow ships that flow in the Service Pro template out of the box.
